Spem in Alium

4 October 2025, Sheffield
Morning venue King Edward VII Upper School
(across the road from:)
Afternoon venue St Mark’s Church, Broomhill

Spem in aliumMartin Lightowler will be joined by Helen Cowen (Sheffield Singers), Kate Thompson (Hallam Choral Society), and Kate Shipway (Sheffield Chorale,  Romulus Singers, Sheffield Music Hub) to help lead the day.

We’ll spend the morning in four pairs of choirs to rehearse Spem in Alium plus one other (shorter, well-known, and gorgeous) motet. Then we will join together in two choirs in the afternoon before final tutti rehearsals.

For our final run-through/performance, we plan to begin and end with Spem in Alium, with each pair of choirs singing their own motet as the jam in the Spem sandwich.

Additional pieces will be:

Agnus Dei from Imogen Holst’s Mass in A minor
Ave Verum Corpus by William Byrd
Abendlied by Josef Rheinberger
Locus Iste by Anton Bruckner
